Over the weekend I watched The Darjeeling Limited on my AppleTV. The story is a little complicated but their three main characters are in India trying to track down their mother. During the course of the movie they have to lug around about ten pieces of luggage wherever they go. A couple of them where large steamer trunks and looked like they were hard to carry around. In the end they were symbolic but as I watched I realized that I wouldn’t want to carry all that if I went on a trip like that.
I started to think about how I would want to travel and I realized that I would try and put everything into one bag. That way I can remain mobile while still keeping everything I need close. It would be nice to carry around a backpacking backpack but I think that it would make me look like a tourist so I’m going to limit myself to one largish messenger bag. This is what I came up with:
- Two pairs of clothes with several pairs of socks. I’m just going to have to hope that wherever I stay will have some kind of facility for cleaning them.
- My Camera. I would want to take pictures of where I go. Unfortunately, because of this I will have to bring some other things:
- 18-200 mm lens
- 50 mm lens
- Memory cards
- Extra battery
- Battery charger
- Memory card reader
- Laptop with charger cable. Now that I have a camera I will need some way to archive my pictures and let people know where I am when I can. This will add a lot of weight and maybe in the future I could get a MacBook Air to cut down on that (this is an excellent case for getting one.)
- iPod. This doesn’t take up much more space and will be a nice way to entertain myself as I go.
- Snacks. I can just restock as I go.
- First Aid Kit. Just in case…
What would you bring?
